Setting Up Your Class Folders on the MAC Server

Some possible uses:

  • Use Home Folder for all your files (up to 1GB)

  • Make Class Drop-Box Folders for Assignment Turn-in

  • Make Class Resource Folders to Share Files with Students

  • Make Group Folders for Students to Use for Projects, Clubs, etc

These instructions are for both students and teachers

(FOR STUDENT TECH TRAINERS: HERE IS THE LIST OF MacID_Student2.xls. OPEN IT IN EXCEL so you can give your homeroom class its usernames.)

Open FINDER

Go > Connect to Server

  1. In the server address window, type:  xfs1.kis.or.kr
  2. Click the "PLUS" sign to add the server
  3. "Connect"
  4. click GEAR icon > change password
  5. IMPORTANT:

  6. USERNAME for TEACHERS is:  FIRST INITIAL + LAST NAME (ex, rboerner) ;   USERNAME for STUDENTS is:  Initials of "first name" + FAMILY NAME + LAST TWO DIGITS OF GRADUATION YEAR (ex., Won Seok Choi would be wschoi10)      IF YOUR USERNAME DOES NOT WORK, TELL YOUR STUDENT TECH TRAINER and we will get the IT Dept. to fix it later.
  1. In "Old password": kisstudent (for students)   1234 (for teachers)
  2. In new password, type: a password you won't forget (like your email password)
  3. "Okay"
  4. Back in "Connect to server" window - IMPORTANT - enter new password
  5. "connect"

TO GO TO YOUR HOME FOLDER (PRIVATE, ONLY YOU CAN ACCESS IT)

In "Select the volumes to mount," > your username to go to your Mac home folder - it's private, just for you

  • this is where you can store files, but YOU CANNOT ACCESS THEM AT HOME - ONLY AT SCHOOL

TO GO TO YOUR SHARED FOLDER (FOR YOUR CLASSES, CLUBS, etc):

In Finder: Go > Connect to Server > KIS > HS > [Your Class, Group, or Club folder in list)

TEACHERS: To create a Class or Club Shared Folder:  EMAIL KENNY with THIS INFO:

  • Your name
  • Folder Name
  • student names
  • which rights do students have? (This is a bit confusing, but very important - you'll find it useful!)
    • Read-only:  students cannot add, change, or delete files (good for class resources). They CAN copy to their computer.
    • Write-only:  students cannot see any files (not even ones they dropped off earlier), they can only add their files to the folder (good for a drop-box of HW, etc)
    • Read-write: students can read, add, change, delete files (good for student work-groups, project and club groups, etc)
  • NOTE: Teachers can request multiple folders of the above types from Kenny
  • NOTE: Teachers have full rights (read-write) in all folders

Finished?  Good.  Spend the rest of the time teaching the Advanced iMovie Skills by clicking the link.
